In 1907, the New York State Board of Charities cited the need for the establishment of a facility in the southeastern part of the state to care for people who were then referred to as “feeble-minded and epileptics.” The appointed commission selected rural Rockland County as the site for the facility, which was named the Eastern N.Y. State Custodial Asylum. In 1908, the state legislature and Governor Hughes approved the appropriation of $188,575 to purchase 2,000 acres of “rolling farm country” in Thiells. In 1909, the facility was renamed Letchworth Village in honor of William Pryor Letchworth, a noted philanthropist, humanitarian and advocate for the creation of the village.
Mr. Letchworth’s plan for the facility was a departure from the normal custodial institution, and he instead created a small “village.” Children and adults who lived there received education, training and vocational instruction. In the 1930’s a farm was created on the grounds, and the acreage was worked by the residents, who were able to learn the trade of farming. The crops, poultry, dairy and pigs that were raised there sustained village residents as well as the live-in staff. The developmental center closed in 1996.

Letchworth Village Home for the Feeble Minded and Epileptics was a psychiatric hospital located in Thiells, New York. It opened in 1911. The hospital was built in a college style layout nestled among beautiful hills, and the buildings are adorned with greek porticoes and tall arched windows. In 1996 a fire destroyed several buildings on the hospital’s property and was forced to close.

Letchworth Village, a haunted village that is known by every teenager in my town. It used to be an entire isolated village where people who were consider mentally insane, had mental retardation, or other diseases that weren’t considered “normal” like epilepsy were put here by the state. Many unexplained deaths and disappearances occurred here. According to some of the patients and people who worked there, many unethical medical procedures were done on the people of Letchworth Village. It was shut down and EVERYTHING was left. Its a bunch of villages and houses. Some were the classrooms, offices, powerplant, and the hospital. The morgue, located in the hospital and another one in the main building, has produced some of the most incredible EVP’s I’ve heard in a while. I’m a student photographer and love to go here and take pictures. I ran into a group of ghost hunters a few weeks ago (scared the hell out of me and my friend, @heyjoon) and they played an EVP they had caught in the hallway of the morgue a few minutes before. It was a man’s voice saying “Help Me”. It sent a shiver up  my spine. We have a rule in Rockland County, NY. It’s “leave nothing, move nothing, take nothing”. Very weird things have happened to some people that take items like blueprints, maps, medical documents, or even medical instruments. Some idiot teenagers even set fire to two of the buildings. During one of my recent shoots a few days ago, I took this picture of the powerplant. It’s one of my favourite places on the Letchworth grounds.
