Opened in 1921, West Park Hospital was once one of the most important hospitals in the London suburbs. In the 1960’s it accommodated more than 2000 patients. The “Care in the Community” policy by Margaret Thatcher caused it to close down in the mid 1990’s, with several other English hospitals as patients were set free and allowed to go back home.
Today the hospital is popular amongst urban explorers, and unfortunately also vandals which is the reason the hospital theatre burned down in 2002. In 2006 efforts were made to make the abandoned site secure and alarm systems and CCTV were installed. Some parts of the buildings were demolished.
