Djúpavík in Iceland.(submission by chrisfox)
The small town in the Westfjords of Iceland used to be a budding fishing town, based on the large schools of herring out in the coastal waters. Then, the fish disappeared. Djúpavík began dwindling down in 1948, until it was all but abandoned by 1968. The nearby establishment, Hótel Djúpavík, boasts the town’s only remaining population, which isn’t much higher than 10 permanent residents, who’s main occupation is conserving the relic buildings. A sizeable fishing ship was abandoned on the shore of the town to whither and rust. Djúpavík’s many abandoned buildings, as well as the town in whole, was prominently featured in the movie Heima by the Icelandic band Sigur Rós.
